BJP-led Mahayuti stakes claim to form government, Indian Express

After the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance clinched landslide victory in Maharashtra Assembly elections, Indian Express reports that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has submitted his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan today. Shinde will be the caretaker CM till the new leader for the post is sworn in, the report says. The term of the current government ends today and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar accompanied Shinde during the resignation. “After the great victory of Mahayuti, our government will be formed once again in the state”, said Shinde in a post on X. NDTV on top Army Officer's bizarre review of women colonels

 

Nearly two years after the Army promoted 108 woman officers to the rank of Colonel after Supreme Court's landmark judgment, a top general has listed "mundane ego issues" and "lack of empathy" among what he calls “serious concerns” in his review of eight Colonel-rank women officers under his command, NDTV reports. Lieutenant General Rajeev Puri, who completed his tenure as commander of 17 Mountain Strike Corps on November 20, has written to General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, Lt General Ram Chander Tiwari, listing findings of a vastly critical "in-house review". Defence sources, however, have told NDTV that the Army is committed to the induction of women officers and that the senior officer's suggestions are meant to improve training standards. Trump threatens China, Mexico, Canada: The Straits Times

US President-elect Donald Trump pledged big tariffs on the US’ three largest trading partners – Canada, Mexico and China – detailing how he will implement campaign promises that could trigger trade wars. The Straits Times reports that Trump, who takes office on January 20, 2025, said he would impose a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico until they clamped down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border, in a move that would appear to violate a free trade deal. Trump also outlined “an additional 10 per cent tariff, above any additional tariffs” on imports from China. Read the full report here.

 

Bangladesh police use teargas, batons against Hindus protesting Chinmoy Das' arrest, Hindustan Times

Hindustan Times reports Bangladesh police used teargas on Hindus protesting against the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a prominent Hindu religious leader. Tensions escalated as police in Dhaka and Chittagong used tear gas to disperse a large crowd of Hindu protesters. The action came even as India urged Bangladesh's caretaker government to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and minorities, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Israel strikes southern Beirut ahead of security cabinet meeting, BBC reports

 

Israeli strikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs after its military issued an evacuation order in the area, BBC reports. The IDF has not yet commented. It comes ahead of a meeting with Israel's security cabinet on Tuesday to discuss a 60-day ceasefire deal with Hezbollah in Lebanon. The report says that the deal would reportedly see Israeli troops gradually withdraw from Lebanon, while Hezbollah would move away from the Israeli border. Read the full report here.
