7 killed in blaze at firecracker factory in Gujarat’s Banaskantha, The Hindu reports
Seven persons were killed after a blast at a firecrackers factory led to a blaze and collapse of parts of the building in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district on Tuesday, officials said. The Hindu reports the incident took place at the unit located near Deesa town. As per preliminary information, a blast at the factory, located in an industrial area, led to a fire and collapse of parts of the building, leaving several persons trapped in the rubble. Firefighters from Deesa municipality doused the blaze, the report added. Read the full report here.
Supreme Court raps UP govt over ‘inhuman’ demolition of houses in Prayagraj, Hindustan Times
The Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed the Uttar Pradesh government and Prayagraj development body for 'inhuman and illegal' demolition of houses, Hindustan Times reports, reminding the authorities that there is “rule of law in the country”. Residential structures of citizens cannot be demolished in such fashion, the Supreme Court said. As per the reports, the Court said Prayagraj demolition “shocks” its conscience, adding that, “There is something called right to shelter, due process of law.” Read the full report here.
Al Jazeera on Trump saying he’ll be ‘kind’ on tariffs
United States President Donald Trump has said his long-awaited reciprocal tariffs will be lower than what other countries charge, Al Jazeera reports, as uncertainty over his biggest trade announcement yet continues to roil global stocks. Speaking at the White House on Monday, Trump said the tariffs he is preparing to announce on Wednesday will be “nicer” than the trade policies of US trading partners. Indian Express: Court orders FIR against BJP minister in 2020 Delhi riots case
A court in the National Capital on Tuesday directed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) and further investigation against Delhi Law and Justice Minister and BJP leader Kapil Mishra over his alleged role in the 2020 riots in the city. Indian Express reports that Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia allowed the application of the complainant, Yamuna Vihar resident Mohammad Ilyas, who had sought an FIR against Mishra as well as the then Station House Officer (SHO) of Dayalpur police station and five others, including BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht and former party legislator Jagdish Pradhan. While allowing the plea, the judge noted that a cognizable offence was made out against Mishra. Read the full report here.
Myanmar quake survivors without food, shelter as death toll climbs: The Straits Times
The traits Times reports that aid groups in the worst-hit areas of Myanmar said there was an urgent need for shelter, food and water after a quake that killed more than 2,700 people. It added that the civil war could prevent help reaching those in need. The death toll from the earthquake last week in Myanmar is at 2,719, the chief of the ruling junta said on April 1, with the figure expected to exceed 3,000. The 7.7-magnitude quake, which hit around lunchtime on March 28, was the strongest to hit the South-east Asian country in more than a century, the report adds. Read the full report here.
