India Today live on Waqf Bill debate in Rajya Sabha
India Today reports that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill has been tabled in Rajya Sabha, a day after it was passed in Lok Sabha following a 12-hour marathon debate. The Bill was passed after all amendments moved by the opposition members were rejected by voice votes. It was passed after division of votes -- 288 in favour and 232 against, the report adds. Supreme Court judges to make their assets public, Indian Express
In a significant decision, all judges of the Supreme Court will publicly declare their assets, Indian Express reported as per its sources. The declaration made to the Chief Justice of India will be uploaded on the Supreme Court website. Sources said that the decision was taken in a full court meeting held on April 1. A copy of the resolution is yet to be made public, the report says. Read the full report here.
World leaders criticise Trump tariffs as 'major blow', BBC reports
US PresidentDonald Trump's decision to impose new tariffs on all goods entering the US is a "major blow to the world economy", European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has said. BBC reports that her comments echo those of a number of other countries, including China, which has expressed its opposition to the move and has warned it will take "resolute countermeasures" against the US. Their words of warning come after the US president announced a universal 10 percent tariff on all imports into the US from 5 April. Around 60 countries will also be hit with steeper tariffs from 9 April. Read the full report here.
Hindustan Times: US man enters Andamans island with coconut and can of cola, arrested
A US citizen has been arrested for attempting to illegally enter the highly restricted North Sentinel Island, a tribal reserve home to one of the most isolated and vulnerable tribes in the world. Hindustan Times reports that the man, identified as Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, 24, was taken into custody by the Crime Investigation Department (CID). Polyakov, who arrived in Port Blair on March 26, allegedly launched a solo expedition to the island, despite the stringent prohibition on outsiders visiting North Sentinel Island. Myanmar earthquake toll crosses 3,000: The Straits Times
The death toll from Myanmar’s devastating earthquake has surpassed 3,000, The Straits Times reports, with hundreds more missing, as forecasts of unseasonal rain presented a new challenge for rescue and aid workers trying to reach people in a country riven by civil war. The 7.7-magnitude quake, one of the South-east Asian nation’s strongest in a century, toppled buildings, flattened communities and left many without food, water and shelter. the report says that the deaths rose to 3,003 on April 2.
