Hindustan Times: SC declines plea to regulate online content

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain a plea seeking regulation of online content, noting that a similar move to ban social media platforms in neighbouring Nepal had sparked massive youth protests and resulted in the government’s collapse, Hindustan Times reports. “You know there was an attempt to ban social media in Nepal and you saw what was the consequence,” a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai said. The bench, also comprising justice K Vinod Chandran, felt that the issue squarely falls within the domain of policy-making and the Parliament and government is open to consider these issues, the report says. 24 killed as truck rams into passenger bus in Telangana's Ranga Reddy, The New Indian Express

 

At least 24 people were killed and several others injured in a horrific road accident in Ranga Reddy district on Monday morning. The New Indian Express reports that the mishap occurred when a speeding lorry carrying a heavy load collided with the Telangana Road Transport Corporation (RTC) vehicle, resulting in the gravel falling on the bus. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the bus was completely mangled. Both the RTC bus driver and the tipper lorry driver died on the spot, along with several passengers, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

Public barred as Tanzanian president sworn in, BBC reports

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been sworn in for a second term amid tight security, BBC reports, following an election marred by violent protests and rejected by the opposition as a sham. The inauguration ceremony is being held at a military parade grounds in the capital, Dodoma, instead of a stadium as in previous years. It is closed to the public but is being shown on state TV. Samia was declared the winner on Saturday with 98 percent of the vote. The report adds that she faced little opposition with key rival candidates either imprisoned or barred from running. NDTV on 10 killed after speeding dumper truck rams several vehicles In Jaipur

At least thirteen people were killed and several injured on Monday when a speeding dumper truck rammed several vehicles in Jaipur, NDTV reports. The incident took place around 1 pm in Jaipur's busy Loha Mandi area. The dumper truck reportedly sped out of control and crashed into several vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, the report says. The truck overturned after hitting a divider, crushing several vehicles beneath it. Read the full report here.

 

Earthquake kills at least 20 as it strikes northern Afghanistan, Al Jazeera reports

 

Al Jazeera reports that a magnitude 6.3 earthquake has killed at least 20 people as it struck northern Afghanistan near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The Taliban Ministry of Public Health reported the death toll on Monday, raising the estimate as search efforts began. A further 320 people are reported to have been injured. The disaster adds to the list of deadly quakes to hit the country since the Taliban took power in 2021, the report mentions, which has tested the movement’s capacity to govern as foreign aid dwindles.
