NDTV reports, Tamil Nadu Governor not convinced Vijay's TVK has majority

TVK chief Vijay may not take oath tomorrow as the Tamil Nadu governor is not convinced his party has the number yet to form the government, NDTV reports as per its sources, explaining the formal position as of now though the Congress has promised support and others are also expected to join. Earlier today he staked claim to form the next government in a meeting with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as the single-largest party winning 108 seats, needed at least 10 seats to hit the majority mark of 118. With the Congress's five, the number rose to 112, excluding one of the two seats that Vijay won - leaving the TVK with a gap of six seats to fill till the finishing line, the report says. Indian Express: Centre to make fresh move for PM-SHRI in Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu

 

Amid the changes of guard in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala after the Assembly poll results, Indian Express reports that the Ministry of Education is preparing a fresh push to implement the Centre’s flagship PM Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI) scheme in these states. A senior ministry official said that letters will soon be sent to the chief secretaries of the three states, requesting them to formally adopt the scheme. Although PM-SHRI was approved in 2022, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala remain the only states yet to implement the scheme, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Israeli attacks on southern, eastern Lebanon kill at least six people, Al Jazeera reports

Israeli air attacks on southern and eastern Lebanon have killed at least six  people and wounded three others, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported, in violation of the ceasefire brokered by the United States last month. Al Jazeera reports that at least four people were killed and three others wounded in an Israeli air strike attack on the town of Zellaya in eastern Lebanon. Israel also launched an attack on southern Lebanon using fighter jets and drones. Read the full report here.

 

Ex-bureaucrats, economists, journalists appointed by Mamata quit after TMC ouster, Hindustan Times

Several former bureaucrats and advisors appointed by outgoing West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee have tendered their resignations following the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections, even as the outgoing chief minister has refused to step down. Hindustan Times reports that the list includes former chief secretaries Alapan Bandyopadhyay, HK Dwivedi and Manoj Pant, as well as economist Abhirup Sarkar. The BJP swept the assembly elections held in April, winning 207 of the 294 seats, while the TMC secured only 80, the report mentions. Read the full report here.

 

BBC on virus-hit cruise ship evacuation

 

A 56-year-old British doctor evacuated from a virus-hit cruise ship is in a stable condition, after previously being critical, the Spanish health minister said as per BBC. Three people were evacuated from the MV Hondius in Cape Verde on Wednesday morning. The Dutch government said they are from Britain, Germany and the Netherlands. The president of the Canary Islands said he opposed the Spanish government's plan to let a virus-hit ship dock there. Read the full report here.
