India Today live: Mallikarjun Kharge slams government over SIR, economy at INDIA bloc meeting

India Today reports that the opposition INDIA bloc is holding a key strategy meeting in New Delhi on Monday, bringing together leaders from 23 parties amid questions over alliance unity following recent electoral setbacks and tensions among some partners. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Supriya Sule, Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, Vaiko, John Brittas and several other opposition leaders are attending the meeting at the Constitution Club, while Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray is expected to join virtually. The DMK has stayed away from the conclave despite outreach by Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party, the report says. while the AAP has distanced itself from the alliance. Heavy rain alerts in Kerala, Hindustan Times reports

 

Heavy rains lashed parts of Kerala on Monday as the southwest monsoon remained active over the state, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue orange and yellow alerts for several districts. The Hindustan Times reports that the IMD issued an orange alert for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on Monday, warning of isolated very heavy rainfall ranging between 11 cm and 20 cm. Meanwhile, the IMD said the southwest monsoon has advanced further into parts of the west-central and entire northeast Bay of Bengal, as well as some additional areas of the northwest Bay of Bengal. Iran fires missiles at Israel after attacks as new war fears rise: Al Jazeera

Israel’s military said Iran has launched a second wave of missiles towards its territory with sirens sounding across the country, Al Jazeera reports. The strikes follow Israeli attacks on Iran with explosions reported in Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan as tensions escalate after Israel struck the southern suburbs of Beirut, killing at least two people and wounding 20, the report says. Iran launched a wave of missiles at northern Israel following the attacks on Beirut accusing Israel of repeatedly violating ceasefire agreements. Read the full report here.

 

Trinamool ‘rebel’ MPs at BJP minister’s home, Indian Express

About 20 of the Trinamool Congress party's 28 Lok Sabha MPs, Indian Express reports, are holed up in an undisclosed location in Delhi. This is playing out at a time when party chief Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and Trinamool general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, are in Delhi to attend a meeting of the INDIA opposition bloc, the report adds. The rebel MPs, it is learnt, are discussing two options: to send a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, asking to be treated as a separate bloc and not under Abhishek Banerjee as parliamentary party leader; the second option they are discussing, sources said, is to go for mass resignation. At least 19 dead and 134 injured in powerful Philippines quake

 

At least 19 people have died after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines at 07:37 local time, BBC reports. The quake struck off the coast of General Santos City in Mindanao - the Philippines' main southern island. At least 129 people have also been injured in the quake, the report says. Several countries in the region, including the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan, issued tsunami warnings but most have now been lifted. Read the full report here.
