Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar on Tuesday assumed her ministerial duties at the state secretariat Mantralaya, NDTV reports, 13 days after the death of her husband and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. She was accompanied by senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders and her elder son Parth Pawar as she took her seat in the deputy CM's office, marking a poignant transition in the state's leadership. Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 shortly after the proceedings resumed amid constant sloganeering by the Opposition. P C Mohan, who was in the chair, tried to pacify the opposition members, but in vain, the report says. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiu said while other opposition MPs were willing to speak, the Congress was not willing to initiate the debate on the Budget. More Australia protests over police crackdown on rally against Herzog visit: Al Jazeera
Australia is bracing for more demonstrations, as political leaders and civic groups appealed for calm, after police were accused of using excessive force against peaceful demonstrations against the visit of Israel’s President Isaac Herzog to Sydney, Al Jazeera reports. Palestine Action Group Sydney called on supporters to gather on Tuesday afternoon to “protest against police brutality” and demand the resignation of government and police officials over what they described as the “violent repression” of “peaceful” demonstrators. The report adds that violence erupted on Monday evening in the heart of Sydney after police prevented thousands of peaceful protesters from marching in an area of the city that authorities had designated off-limits. Woman dies, six injured in stampede at Navgrah temple in MP’s Gwalior district, Hindustan Times
A woman was killed and six others were injured in a stampede at the Navgrah temple in Dabra town of Gwalior district, Madhya Pradesh. Hindustan Times reports that Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan said several women had gathered near the Dabra stadium on Sunday morning for the Kalash Yatra. Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, refused to answer questions from the US House Oversight Committee on Monday, BBC reports. Maxwell appeared virtually for a closed-door deposition from the Texas prison where she is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking. The report adds that Republican House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer said that "as expected", Maxwell pleaded the Fifth Amendment, invoking her right to remain silent.
