Hindustan Times: Union Cabinet passes resolution honouring PM Modi's record run in office

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday passed a resolution applauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for becoming India's longest-serving elected prime minister in consecutive terms, and members of the Cabinet gave him a standing ovation to mark the milestone. Hindustan Times reports that the resolution came on a day when Modi surpassed the record of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in terms of uninterrupted tenure as an elected prime minister. Powerful western disturbance to drench north, India Today

 

A powerful western disturbance is set to trigger a spell of widespread rain, thunderstorms, hailstorms and squally winds across large parts of north India over the coming days, India Today reports, bringing relief from the intense summer heat but also raising the risk of weather-related disruptions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh western disturbance moving across the western Himalayas, coupled with multiple cyclonic circulations and troughs extending from northwest India to the Bay of Bengal, is expected to influence weather conditions across the region until at least June 16. Protesters torch cars, buildings in Belfast after knife attack: Al Jazeera

Anti-immigrant protesters in the city of Belfast in the United Kingdom have torched vehicles and buildings after a Sudanese man was arrested over a knife attack that left one person with serious injuries. Al Jazeera reports that hundreds of protesters, many of them masked, gathered at several locations across the city on Tuesday, setting fire to a bus and several cars. A building near the city centre was also set alight, with residents telling the AFP news agency that the protesters started a fire in the bins and went on to throw petrol bombs. Sushmita Dev quits Trinamool, NDTV reports, meets Himanta Biswa Sarma for "guidance"

NDTV reports that another Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP, Sushmita Dev, resigned from all party posts, making her the second Rajya Sabha MP from the party to do so this week. And this is only the third day of the week, the report says. Pakistan launches deadly strikes on Afghanistan, Wion reports

 

Pakistan launched massive strikes near Afghanistan border on Tuesday, Wion reports following a period of relative calm. Afghan government officials said that Pakistani military “violated Afghanistan's airspace and bombed civilian homes” in the provinces of Kunar, Khost, and Paktika killing at least 13 people. Just a day ago, India slammed Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council, for carrying out deadly airstrikes in Afghanistan that have killed hundreds of civilians, the report adds.
