India Today on big top court relief for Vantara

The Supreme Court on Monday said there was nothing wrong with the transfer of temple elephants to Reliance Foundation’s Vantara initiative as long as due procedure was followed, India Today reports. The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the movement of elephants to the wildlife facility in Gujarat. The report says that a top court bench noted that the committee appointed to examine the issue had submitted its report, which recorded satisfaction with the regulatory compliance. Andhra pegs shrimp export losses at Rs 25,000 crore, Indian Express

 

Andhra Pradesh has estimated that due to Trump US tariffs, shrimp export losses are approximately Rs 25,000 crore, Indian Express reports, with about 50 percent of export orders cancelled. Nearly Rs 600 crore in tariff burden has fallen on about 2,000 containers being exported, government officials said Monday. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has once again appealed to the Centre to support aqua farmers in Andhra Pradesh who are facing severe distress due to US-imposed tariffs, the report says. Brazil's Lula hits back at Trump over Bolsonaro trial and tariffs, BBC reports

BBC reports that Brazil's president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has defended the trial which saw his predecessor in office, Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for plotting a coup. In an opinion piece published in the New York Times, Lula dismissed the description by US President Donald Trump of the trial as a "witch hunt", saying that it was a "historic decision which safeguard's our institutions and the democratic rule of law". The report adds that the Brazilian leader said he had written the essay to establish an open and frank dialogue with US President Donald Trump, who has imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports. Hindustan Times on heavy rainfall in parts of Marathwada

Eleven people stranded in a flooded area in rain-soaked Beed district of Maharashtra were rescued by an IAF chopper on Monday, while Army personnel have been deployed in Ashti taluka for flood relief work, officials said. Hindustan Times reports that as many as 51 people are awaiting evacuation in various villages, and an NDRF team has been mobilised after heavy rains lashed Beed district in Marathwada on Sunday night, leading to flooding of low-lying areas. Heavy rains have soaked five of eight districts in Marathwada, sending several rivers into spate and inundating several areas. Read the full report here.

 

Rubio reissues US support for Israel as missiles rain down on Gaza: Al Jazeera

 

Six-year-old twins were among 25 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza City this morning, Al Jazeera reports. As Israeli attacks intensified, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowed that Washington would provide ‘unwavering support’ to Israel in achieving its goals in Gaza. Qatar hosted leaders of the Arab and Muslim world in Doha today to issue a joint response to Israel’s attack on the capital last week. The report also adds that at least 16 buildings were destroyed by Israeli forces in Gaza City yesterday. Their attacks killed 53 Palestinians. Read the full report here.
