14 injured, 20 missing after landslides in Uttarakhand's Chamoli
Fourteen people were feared trapped and 20 were injured as landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rain flattened more than 30 houses in four villages in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Thursday, NDTV reports. All four villages come under the Nandanagar area, about 260 km from Dehradun and 50 km from Chamoli district headquarters at Gopeshwar. Nandanagar is already reeling from land subsidence. The disaster struck Kuntari Lagaphali, Kuntari Lagasarpani, Sera, and Dhurma, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami told reporters here after reviewing the situation. Read the full report here.
Rahul Gandhi mounts fresh ‘vote chori’ charges, Indian Express reports
Launching yet another scathing attack on the Election Commission of India, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi Thursday alleged irregularities in addition and deletion of votes in the country, Indian Express reports, saying someone has been systematically targeting millions of voters whose names have been deliberately removed from electoral rolls across constituencies. During a special press briefing at the AICC Indira Bhawan headquarters in Delhi, Gandhi also accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of protecting “vote chors” and those “killing democracy” in India. Jimmy Kimmel taken off air over Charlie Kirk comments, BBC reports
ABC has pulled late-night host Jimmy Kimmel off air indefinitely over comments he made about the shooting of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk, BBC reports. "Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted indefinitely," a spokesperson for the Disney-owned network said in a statement. Earlier this week, Kimmel said during his show that the "Maga gang" was trying to score political points off Kirk's killing, the report adds. Read the full report here.
Hindustan Times report, Kerala on alert as ‘brain-eating amoeba’ kills 19
Kerala is on alert after infections caused by a rare water-borne ‘brain-eating amoeba’ have doubled compared to last year in the state where 19 deaths have been reported due so far, including nine in September alone. Hindustan Times reports that Kerala last year had reported 36 infections of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, caused by Naegleria fowleri amoeba – which is called "brain-eating amoeba" because it can infect the brain and destroy brain tissue. Officials have reported 19 deaths and 72 infections of amoebic meningoencephalitis this year, including nine deaths and 24 cases in September alone. Read the full report here.
Israel ground invasion traps hundreds of thousands in Gaza City: Al Jazeera
The Israeli military killed at least 79 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, including dozens in Gaza City, where a major offensive continues despite threats of sanctions against Israel. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reports the Israeli army continued to apply “extreme pressure” to force hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the north into overcrowded central and southern Gaza.
