NDTV on top court's proposal to government on Delhi air crisis
The Supreme Court on Friday proposed directing the central government to post police personnel at road checkpoints on Delhi's borders to monitor entry of trucks into the national capital region, NDTV reports. Delhi is battling its annual air quality crisis and has implemented measures that include banning entry of commercial vehicles for non-essential goods or services. The court also dismissed as "arbitrary" the Delhi government counsel's plea they had, in fact, stopped trucks carrying non-essential goods from entering the city, the report adds. Hindustan Times reports 10 maoists killed in Sukma encounter
At least 10 Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Sukma district on Friday, the police said. The Hindustan Times reports that the encounter took place in the jungles of Korajuguda, Dantewada, Nagaram and Bhandarpadar in Sukma district. Inspector General of Police, Bastar range, Sunderaj P, said that the District Reserve Guard (DRG) team and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were part of the operation. The teams have recovered several weapons, including INSAS rifles, AK-47 rifles, and SLR rifles, the report states. Read the full report here.
Trump picks Pam Bondi as attorney general after Matt Gaetz withdraws, BBC reports
US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated veteran prosecutor Pam Bondi as his new pick for attorney general, BBC reports, hours after Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration. Bondi has a long track record in law enforcement and previously served as Florida's attorney general. A long-time Trump ally, the report mentions that Bondi was part of his legal team during his first Senate impeachment trial and also publicly supported him by showing up at court during his hush money trial in New York. A sprawling bribery and securities fraud scandal has ensnared Gautam Adani, one of India’s richest men, and his family. India Today reports that the allegations, levelled by US authorities, detail a scheme involving hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes paid to Indian officials to secure lucrative power deals. At the heart of the scandal is Sagar Adani, the 30-year-old nephew of the billionaire tycoon. Court filings accessed by news agency Reuters reveal that Sagar meticulously documented the bribes on his mobile phone, including the amount offered, the megawatts of power purchased in return, and even a per-megawatt bribe rate, often in cryptic WhatsApp messages. Russia’s Putin hints at strikes on West in ‘global’ Ukraine war: The Straits Times
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Nov 21 that the conflict in Ukraine had characteristics of a “global” war and did not rule out strikes on Western countries, The Straits Times reports. The Kremlin strongman spoke out after a day of frayed nerves, with Russia test-firing a new generation intermediate-range missile at Ukraine – which Mr Putin hinted was capable of unleashing a nuclear payload. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky branded the strike a major ramping up of the “scale and brutality” of the war by a “crazy neighbour”, the report says, while Kyiv’s main backer the United States said that Russia was to blame for escalating the conflict “at every turn”.
