High alert in Assam after heavy rain, flash floods hit parts of Arunachal, NDTV reports

The Assam government is closely monitoring the situation after heavy rainfall and flash floods in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, which is expected to have a downstream impact in several Assam districts, NDTV reports. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the report says, Guwahati and Meteorological Centre, Itanagar, Yazali station in Lower Subansiri district recorded about 72.8 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours, with a major part of the rainfall occurring between 6:00 am and 9:00 am on 24 June. Flooded roads, uprooted trees, wall collapse: Monsoon hits Mumbai hard: India Today

 

Mumbaikars woke up to a familiar monsoon scene on Wednesday, with flooded streets, uprooted trees and traffic snarls after more than 300 mm of rain lashed several parts of the city over the past 24 hours, India Today reports. South Mumbai recorded its wettest June day in more than a decade, receiving 248 mm of rainfall. The widespread disruption left many residents wondering how the rest of the monsoon season would unfold if such destruction was visible within the first 24 hours of the monsoon's official onset. Power outages in France as Europe bakes in record heat, Al Jazeera

Much of Western Europe is in the grip of a sweltering heatwave that has smashed temperature records in many countries and left tens of thousands of people without power in France. Al Jazeera reports that the extreme weather is being driven by atmospheric and circulation patterns that keep hot air trapped in place for days, causing the mercury to slowly rise, as global warming exacerbates these factors. The heatwave caused the first major power outage of this latest bout of extreme weather in France after a heat-related incident with a transformer left about 68,000 households on Wednesday without electricity in the northwestern department of Finistere. Hindustan Times on Maharashtra's new plan to curb child marriage

Maharashtra is considering a rule to print the birth dates of the bride and groom on wedding invitation cards to help curb child marriages, Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare said on Wednesday. Hindustan Times reports that the state aims to bring the incidence of the illegal practice below 10 per cent within the next five years, she said, replying to a question raised by BJP member Atul Bhatkhalkar in the legislative assembly. Maharashtra has written to the Rajasthan government to study its practice of mentioning the dates of birth of both the bride and groom on wedding invitation cards, the report says. BBC reports, clean sweep for Mamdani-backed candidates in New York's Democratic primary

 

US congressman Dan Goldman has been defeated in a New York primary election, capping a clean sweep for candidates backed by New York's democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, BBC reports. Goldman was beaten by progressive challenger Brad Lander in New York's 10th congressional district in a contest that laid bare the party's divisions over the Israel-Gaza war. The report says that Lander has accused Israel of genocide in Gaza. Goldman, a two-term incumbent, was backed by pro-Israel groups. Read the full report here.
