India Today on Supreme Court upholding Christian officer's dismissal

India Today reports that the Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the dismissal of a Christian Army officer who refused to enter the sanctum sanctorum of a temple, observing that the Army as an institution is secular, and its discipline cannot be compromised. "You have hurt the feelings of your soldiers," the top court remarked, blasting the officer, Samuel Kamalesan, of gross indiscipline and calling him a "complete misfit for the Army". Kamalesan, who joined the Indian Army in 2017 and was assigned to the Sikh squadron, had challenged the disciplinary action, arguing that being compelled to enter the temple violated his religious freedom. Indian Express: IMD says Ethiopian volcano ash will pass India to China by evening

 

Indian airlines Air India and Akasa Air on Tuesday said they cancelled some flights after ash from a volcano eruption in Ethiopia drifted into Indian airspace and disrupted operations, Indian Express reports. Following a directive to airlines from aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air India cancelled 11 flights on Monday and Tuesday as they made precautionary checks on aircraft that had flown over a few locations after the eruption. Akasa scrapped scheduled flights with destinations in Middle East such as Jeddah, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi. However, the report says that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the ash clouds are flying towards China and will exit India’s air space by 7.30 pm on Tuesday. Russia and Ukraine trade deadly strikes overnight, BBC reports

Russia and Ukraine have conducted overnight drone strikes against each other, killing at least five people, BBC reports. Officials in Kyiv said a "massive" overnight Russian drone strike on the city had killed at least two people and injured six more. The attack in the early hours of Tuesday also hit at least two residential buildings, triggering fires and disrupting electricity and water supplies. Meanwhile, the report says that the Russian officials said at least three people had been killed in a Ukrainian strike in the Rostov region. The latest attacks come after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed proposed changes to the controversial 28-point US peace plan for ending the war with Russia. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju to hold all-party meeting on Nov 30: Hindustan Times

Ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has called an all-party meeting on November 30, Hindustan Times reported as per its sources. Earlier, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal told ANI that an all-party meeting will be held to share the list of bills with the Leader of the Opposition, to take their suggestions. Kiren Rijiju had announced that the winter session of Parliament would run from December 1 to 19, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

Afghanistan says Pakistan bombed Khost, killing nine children and a woman, Al Jazeera

 

At least nine children and a woman have been killed after Pakistani forces bombed a house in the country’s southeastern Khost province, according to Afghan authorities. Al Jazeera reports that Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Taliban administration, said on Tuesday that the attack took place at midnight in the district of Gurbuz. The report says that the latest attack risks triggering renewed hostilities and comes as a fragile ceasefire between the two nations hangs by a thread, with each side blaming the other for the impasse in the negotiations.
